Short Films Production Diary: Week 1

Monday 7th March

Today was our first day of filming, we are filming The Spider and The Fly first. We met at base to collect the equipment, camera, tripod and boom, and then took a mini bus with the actors to the location. We had planned to start filming at 11 and finish at 2, we were on schedule and ending up returning back to college just before 2. Since it was a small shoot with only 4 scenes we did not take a lunch break. The Assistant Director was needed on another shoot therefore I completed the paperwork on behalf of him, the paperwork was the daily production report - this includes details about the scenes that were shot, the length of time, the amount of set ups, when we started filming, when we finished filming and when lunch was taken. We were outside in the wind therefore it was quite hard for me to do this paperwork during the shoot but I made note of all the necessary information and completed it inside. My role on set was to ensure all the correct paperwork was there and being used, I made sure that all of the scenes were shot and that the director and DOP had the right shot list, I also made sure the actors, in particular the supporting actors, knew what scenes were being filmed and made sure they were prepared for them. Overall, I feel that today went really well.

Tuesday 8th March
Today was our longest day on set for The Spider and the Fly, we had 9 scenes to film with lots of set ups and costume changes as these scenes take place over a period of time. The director was hoping to be filming before 11, the location was close to base therefore travel time was quite short however one of the actors was late which then set off a knock-on affect. The AD was on set today therefore he completed the daily production report leaving me to just organise the paperwork. Because we filmed 9 scenes it was important that I ensured the correct shot lists were being used as well as looking for continuity - the most being making the bed again after a scene. The room we were filming in was quite small and tight for all 5 crew members and the camera to be in therefore I spent lots of time outside the room, ready to help when I could, but still trying to perform my own role and not someone else's. I helped as best as I could, giving them the correct shot lists and script when needed, as well as helping the actors however I felt like I just stood around not doing much for the majority of the day. Despite being late to film we managed to finish on time, we only took a half an hour lunch break and had to do this without finishing the scene because people's stomachs were grumbling and it was being picked up while recording. Today was very tiring but definitely a learning experience, the footage we recorded today will take up about half of the ten minute film.

Wednesday 9th March

Today we were filming the majority of the scenes which included the character Josh/Mr Benson, played by the director's boyfriend Joey, for The Spider and the Fly. This was a night time shoot as Joey works during the day, I was able to get to the location however could not get home - the location was quite far from base and filming wouldn't end until 8pm therefore I could not the bus and a taxi would cost a lot. I explained to the Assistant Director the paperwork I normally conducted on set and he took on those responsibilities for the day. Using FaceTime I advised during the first shots so that I was still contributing and assisting the director. I stayed up to date with them during filming, however we did not communicate lots as phones aren't supposed to be used on set.

Thursday 10th March

Today we had 2 scenes to film for The Spider and the Fly, one should've been filmed on Wednesday but wasn't because it was too dark outside. The first scene was shot in a multi-story carpark, we had to be very careful when filming as to not get any signage or branding in when filming. It was a very cold morning but we got all the shots we wanted. Then we changed location to shoot the carried over scenes. After this we filmed the first scene Luggage in Limbo (my film!!!), the scene actually included the DOP who wanted a small cameo role, he played a Dutch news reporter. Because the dialogue was in Dutch and Harvey didn't speak Dutch, he struggled greatly, after numerous attempts at the dialogue I had originally written I decided to change the dialogue slightly - it still had the same meaning but was less words and easier for Harvey to say. We used the green screen so in editing I can put an appropriate background to make it look like he's in a news studio.

It was very cold so only got one BTS photo:

Saturday 12th March

Today was the last main day for filming The Spider and the Fly, with only 2 scenes left there being filmed on Friday 18th along with scenes in the other 2 films. It was an outdoor shoot, but it wasn't too cold. There was lots of waiting around as we were filming on a housing estate where cars would be traveling and people walking. We were doing a tracking shot meaning that the camera operator was stood on the road whilst the characters were walking on the path. This took a little longer than expected; we took a half an hour lunch before moving onto the next location. This went very much to plan but because it was in a public location we had a similar problem as before - having to wait for people walking to be out of shot. We finished late but managed to get all the shots wanted. Today the director was also the camera operator because after having looked through the footage from earlier that week there were many shots that were unusable so she decided to take on the role herself.
