Today, on an incredibly sunny and hot day, we filmed a scene from Matty's short film Conscience. We filmed a scene in a bathroom where the main character punches a mirror, we used the toilets in college as the scene takes place in the character's office. Because the character needed to smash a mirror the plan was to buy a mirror to place in front of the mirrors in the toilet and use camera angles to make it look like it was part of the main mirrors on the wall. Matty planned to smash the mirror before placing it, making sure it was safe for the actor to punch towards the mirror without actually breaking it and possibly injuring myself. After numerous attempts with different tools Matty finally managed to smash the mirror (we believe it was a plastic mirror which is why it took so long to smash) it smashed in a circular shape and we carried it laid down flat into the bathroom but when Matty tried to stand it up against the mirrored wall the smashed pieces moved and you could see the cardboard backing. This didn't work therefore we left that shot and continued filming the rest of the scene, Matty will either have to get another mirror and try smashing it or work out some way when editing to avoid showing the smashed mirror.
The scene went very well, makeup was done at 5 and didn't take long and we were ready to start at 17:25, we finished after 6 with the shots going to plan.
It was a great shoot everyone worked well despite the heat, Ben was the boom operator, Taylor directed, Matty was DOP and I was 1st AD, I took note of start and wrap times as well as going through the shots we did and what was wrong with them or whether they were fine, this will help Matty when he's editing.
