When I released my documentary I created a survey on Survey monkey to collect feedback from viewers.
The video and survey link were shared - on Facebook to my friends and family,
- on Youtube,
- on my Twitter
- The parent in the video shared the video and survey link to Facebook groups such as Teesside Freshers 2016-2017 Child Nurses, Happy Feet Talipes and STEPS (the main charity in the UK for talipes) this allowed me to get a larger portion of audience feedback of the target audience.
Within 1 week I had 47 responses, the survey included a range of 10 questions types - some required the respondent to write/explain their answer others they just clicked on the appropriate answer.
The 6 questions with responses that were multi choice:
Question five asked "what did you enjoy most about Footprints?" the responses were that the audience thoroughly enjoyed the family focus and information being given; a lot of the comments were very similar and repetitive.
The following question then asked "what did you enjoy least about Footprints?" fewer responses were given as contributors had the ability to skip, the majority of the others said 'nothing' or 'N/A' however one comment said there was "not enough cutaways to scientific graphics and lifestyle cutaways with the family" this is something I will remember for future factual projects.
The seventh question asked "what improvements or changes would you suggest?" there were fewer responses to this questions, some said"none" however others suggested interviewing other family members, which is something I considered but knew that the film was already going to be long with the main details therefore interviewing more would mean having less focus on the parents and doctor or the documentary would be longer. Another comment pointed out that the angle the doctor was interviewed at was too low, this is something I was aware of during post-production and will learn from for future films. A couple of comments suggested having more than one family/baby involved as every experience will be different. This was a great suggestion, I had thought about it in development however knew it would be difficult and contacting or finding people would be hard so I dismissed it as I knew by having one family would allow more time for the doctor to explain as well as the details about this family. If I were to make this documentary again I would seriously consider adding more babies or finding an adult with the condition and talking about how their life growing up was affected and what's it like for them as an adult.
The final question asked for any further comments most of which were compliments to me as the producer/director which was very nice to know that a film I've made is something others enjoy and makes me incredibly proud of my work.
That's great Jess well done, what a lovely idea to get audience feedback that you can learn from
