Unit 8: Task 1 - Presentation and Research into Production Comapnies

Unit 8: Understanding the Television and Film Industry

Danniella and I worked together to make the presentation, for the majority of the content we used our class notes and only researched little bits for examples. We worked together when making the presentation for most of it, I did some parts independently and asked Danniella to proof read it.

In class we created a monopoly game, I researched 2 small British production companies to be included in the game, these were Bedlam Productions Ltd and Number 9 films, because they are small there is limited information available even on their websites.

Bedlam Productions is an independent film and television production company, founded in 2009 by Simon Egan and Gareth Ellis-Unwin who met while studying film. They have a net worth of £57 however this does not mean they’re capable of big things they’re most noticeable pieces of work was the 2010 feature film The King’s Speech which starred Colin Firth. The film made over £250 million internationally and received a great response from critics; the film won 7 BAFTAs and 4 Academy Awards. Bedlam worked with 2 other British production companies this is probably due to money and receiving grants but also may be because each production company was known for a certain type of filmmaking, Bedlam is known for and makes lots of documentaries; this would come in handy during The Kings Speech as it is based on true events. Bedlam productions is a private limited company which means they have their own legal identity and can sue or own assets in their own right. The owners or shareholders are not personally liable for the company’s debt.

Number 9 films is a British Independent film production company co-founded in 2002 by Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley. The company is one of the United Kingdom’s leading independent production companies and is well known for films How to Lose a Friend and Alienate People; Made in Dagenham and Carol. The majority of the films received good reviews from critics with some of their films being nominated for and winning BAFTAs, Emmy’s and Academy Awards. Not only do they produce theatrically-released films they also have produced a number of films that have opened in film festivals. Their films have featured some very well-known actors for example Helena Bonham Carter in Great Expectations.
