Short Films Production Diary: Week 2

Tuesday 15th March

Today we filmed the main part of the incident, this was a party scene and needed lots of extras, because of this it took some time to work out the background sound, so that it was present but not too loud and didn't drown out the dialogue. I was the sound operator therefore I spent the night standing with the DOP (Matty) and holding the boom, it is not my favourite role but it was not unbearable. We were very delayed because a shoot that involved one of our main actors ran over and we had to wait for him to go through makeup as well. It was a long night and we filmed all but the major scene which was a bottle being thrown and a character falling onto the glass and being impaled in the neck. We will have to do this scene in pick up week, however we shot enough footage with the extras for before and after the bottle bit so that we will not need all of the extras again. Most shots went to plan and there were lots of moving and set ups; the only problem with a shot being when we filmed outside, because it was dusk/night the lighting was very bad and it started to rain so we had to make sure no rain was on the camera lens.

Wednesday 16th March

Today we filmed for close to 2 hours, we did not have many scenes, in fact it was one scene from different angles. There was no sound needed most of the time however in one part the character is crying therefore that had to be recorded. We had to use a studio light as we were filming in a bedroom in daylight, we shut the blinds. We finished all scenes on time, so it was a successful shoot.

Friday 18th March

Today was the last day of scheduled filming, I filmed the second scene of my film Luggage in Limbo, this went really well! We filmed in the aviation students' plane, it took about 2 hours to film all 3 pages of dialogue from a couple different angles. We couldn't get too many shots as it was a very small space. Next, we were supposed to film the last scenes of The Spider and the Fly however Danniella (the director) was ill and did not think the Assistant Director (Matthew) would be able to handle the shoot on his own. The last scene we had to film was one from The Incident, this was done outside the college meaning we had a couple problems with people walking into shot, looking at the camera and too much noise from cars in the car park, because of this it took longer to get the shots however we finished on time and got everything we should have.

We will film the last scenes from The Spider and the Fly in pick up week.
