This week I have been preparing for filming my John Lewis Christmas Advert, which is taking place this week end. I am filming in 2 different locations therefore it will be a 2 day shoot, however it will only tae 2 hours max on each day.
In order to be ready to film this weekend I completed a story board which will help me when completing a shot list, as well as helping me during editing. This is where I saw what my advert will actually look like and helped get my thoughts and views out of my head and onto paper. I then sorted out the necessary paperwork - location agreements, artist release forms for adults and children, call sheets and a risk assessment. I have emailed the artist whose song I will be using in the background of my advert but am yet to receive a response.
This time of year is possibly the best yet worst to be filming a Christmas advert, obviously it's the best because every where is Christmassy and makes the best location and atmosphere for filming however it's the worst because all of the actors are busy with Pantomimes. Due to this, I am lucky enough to have very willing family members who will help me out. My gran will be playing the lonely old woman in my advert and my younger cousins will be playing the two children.
When filming with children on Sunday I will have to complete a time sheet which will detail the amount of time children are on set for - this is because there are legal requirements which entail that children cannot work for over a certain time and must have breaks during this time. One of my child actors is 11, she is allowed to work for 5 hours in total, working only 2.5 hours at one time, my other child actor is 8 meaning she can only work for 3 hours in total, working 2.5 hours at one time. This does not seem to pose any queries as filming should not take more than 2.5 hours but learning and knowing this now will help for future assignments and for when I work in the industry.
On Thursday 10th I collected and took home the necessary equipment for the shoot - a camera with an SD card, a tripod, a light with a soft box and the wheel. The lighting is needed because I'm filming indoors and the Christmas fairy lights on the trees won't be enough light for us to clearly see the faces of the actors. I am using the wheel during a short tracking shot and want it to be as steady as possible however I couldn't use the dolly as the ground is uneven.
I have chosen to use my house and my gran's house to film in - this is because the Old Woman needs to be shown in a house that could belong to an Old lady therefore I decided to use a house owned by old people however for the children they need to be shown in a decorated house with lots of lights and decorations, therefore thought my house was the best. I am filming this weekend because this is the only weekend I will be seeing my cousins before Christmas and it fits in the schedule of my gran. There is a downfall to filming this weekend and this is that none of my crew is available therefore I will be filming by myself but I have hired Andrew Bramfitt (my dad) to be my First Assistant Director and he will be helping me when filming. Also Lisa Bramfitt (my mum) will be my Second Assistant Director who will be in charge of the children on Sunday.
I am looking forward to filming my advert as I will get the chance to be the Director and Director of Photography meaning I will get lots of experience doing both. Also, I am looking forward to editing as I know already that I will be using affects therefore I will get to experiment more using Premier Pro.
