Today I received my brief for my script writing assignment. I have been asked to write a short story script lasting 10 minutes based on one of the original story types as identified by Phil Parker.
The 10 story types are:
- The Romance
- The Character who Cannot be Put Down
- The Unrecognised Virtue
- The Gift that is Taken Away
- The Fatal Flaw
- The Quest
- The Debt that Must be Repaid
- The Rites of Passage
- The Spider and the Fly
- The Wanderer
I have decided to develop the synopsis for Luggage in Limbo into a short film, that will follow the Rites of Passage story type and be a coming of age film.
The Rites of Passage
The Rites of Passage
This
is where a character recognises that he/she has reached the next ‘age’ in their
life and attempts to learn what she needs to know to adapt to this new age.
They try to act as if they have already acquired the necessary knowledge and
fails. They then encounter a challenge which requires them to reach beyond what
they have already achieved. The success reflects the maturation into the next
phase of life.
Examples:
Stand By Me, The Breakfast Club
